Wall Sconces: How to Choose the Right Pair

Choosing one wall light is fairly easy.
Choosing two that look right together in the room is where things get interesting.
We've seen beautiful sconces installed too far apart, too high beside a mirror, or simply too small for the wall around them. There's nothing necessarily wrong with the lights themselves, it's their relationship with the room that feels wrong.

We look at where pairs of wall sconces work particularly well, how to think about their height and spacing, and how their scale should relate to fireplaces, mirrors, beds and other architectural features.
One tip before you start measuring:
Don't look at the empty wall alone.
Think about what the two sconces are framing.
That might be a mirror, artwork, a fireplace, a headboard or even the entrance into another room. Once you identify that relationship, choosing the right pair becomes much easier.
